Did you know that two months of reading skills are lost over the summer?  Summer reading isn't extra, it's essential.  Keeping kids reading during the summer break can be a game-changer for success.  So what can families do during the summer months to help?  We invite you to have a look at some of these local resources to keep students reading and learning during their summer break.

Summer Reading Information for Families

Hickory City Schools will offer two ways for children, ages 18 and under, to receive meals this summer.  Weekly meal pick-up will take place on Thursdays from May 28 through August 13.  Morning pick-up for seven-day meals will take place from 9:00 to 11:00 am at Hickory Crawdads Stadium.  Afternoon pick-up for three-day or seven-day meals will take place from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at Henry Fork River Park.  Registration is required.  Families will need to fill out one form per child.  Click on the link below to learn more and to register.

Southwest Primary will host its Spring Book Fair on May 4 - 8, 2026.  There are two ways to shop our fair, in person and online.  Students can shop in person May 5 - 8.  Monday, May 4, will be a preview only day so students can make their wish lists.  Online shopping is available May 1 - 14.  You can shop our online fair by visiting our fair's homepage at https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bf/southwestprimaryschool.

There will also be special shopping times for families to shop together at the Book Fair.  These special times are:

8:00 - 8:30 am:  Tuesday through Friday, May 5 - 8.

3:00 - 5:00 pm:  Tuesday through Thursday, May 5 - 7.

Wednesday, May 6:  Grandparents Day - Grandparents are invited to come eat lunch with their student and then shop the fair together.

Thursday, May 7:  Family Day - Come shop the fair together as a family.

Book Fair will end at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 8, so make sure to get your shopping done before that time.

We are so excited to welcome your child to Southwest Primary School for the 2026-2027 school year.  Kindergarten is a big and exciting step, and we are honored to begin this journey with you and your child.  We invite you to join us for Kindergarten Parent Orientations on April 16 at 9:00 am or 6:00 pm.  This is a special time to meet our staff, learn about our school, and begin building connections with our Southwest family.  To help your child have a smooth and joyful start to kindergarten, we are sharing some important links and information that can assist you in your planning.

Longview Elementary and Southwest Primary will host a Multicultural Night at Longview Elementary on Thursday, March 26, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  From 5:00 to 6:00 there will be exhibits, games, and food samples for families to enjoy.  Multicultural performances will begin at 6:00 in the Longview gym.  We look forward to seeing all of our Southwest families there.

Southwest Primary will host a Family Fun Day on Saturday, April 25, from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm.  The event will be held at Southwest Primary on the playground behind the school.  Purchase $5.00 armbands for unlimited games, activities, and bounce houses.  There will be hot dogs for sale as well.  We look forward to seeing all of our Southwest families at our Family Fun Day!

Southwest Primary will be celebrating Read Across America week March 2 - 6, 2026.  View our flyer for the daily themes so you can take part in all the reading fun.

Southwest Primary Cubs & Co. is hosting a snowball fight with our principal, Mrs. Sigmon, and our assistant principal, Mrs. Blaylock.  The event will benefit the Southwest Primary clothes closet.  Money collection for the Change War will start on Monday, January 12, and continue through Friday, January 16.  Mrs. Sigmon and Mrs. Blaylock are excited to have a snowball fight with the winning class from each grade level!

November and December were full of joy, collaboration, creativity, and so much learning at Southwest Primary.  From exploring cultures and driving into scientific investigations to exploring mathematical concepts and strengthening phonics skills, our students have been working hard while having fun.  We're so proud of their curiosity, teamwork, and growth one step at a time.

As we welcome the new year and jump back into learning this January, we're excited to keep the momentum going.  Mid-year is a powerful time for growth, and our students are ready to dig deeper, challenge themselves, and continue building strong academic skills with confidence and enthusiasm.  We look forward to seeing our students each day as we continue learning and growing.

Join us in the Southwest Primary cafeteria on December 11, 2025, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, to make Christmas ornaments with Santa.  Families can make an ornament, and enjoy a cookie and hot chocolate, for $5.00 each.  Families can also have their photo made with Santa for $5.00.  The event is sponsored by Southwest Primary Cubs & Co.  We look forward to seeing you there!

A hot dog and bake sale will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm outside the IGA in Longview.  All proceeds will go to benefit Southwest Primary.  Drop by for a hot dog and a sweet treat all to support our school.  We hope to see you there!

Southwest Primary recently held its first Friday CARES! We are so grateful to all the amazing volunteers who supported our students today! Thanks to you, our teachers participated in extended planning time while students played games, read books, and even learned sign language to develop executive functioning skills with our wonderful community helpers. What a fantastic day of learning and fun!

Our preschool students have been learning important lessons about how to stay safe and be prepared in case of a fire. To support these lessons, the Longview Fire Department visited our campus to share valuable information and demonstrate their firetruck and equipment.

Our lion cubs learned what to do in an emergency and how firefighters help keep our community safe.

A big thank you to the Longview Fire Department for supporting our students and teaching such an important lesson!
